Pilar Uribe's work bridges the gap between photography and interpretive art, transforming images of flowers and woods into vivid experiences that reflect her emotional journey during their capture. With a foundation in photography, Pilar conveys the excitement felt when encountering the captivating array of colors presented by nature—from the singular beauty of a flower to expanses dominated by a unified hue.
Her latest series, "Into the Woods," draws inspiration from the 1987 musical by Stephen Sondheim. Like the familiar storybook characters who wander into a mystical forest in the play, Pilar invites viewers to embark on a journey through the emotional and symbolic landscapes of the woods. This installation is an exploration of the dualities found within the forest—a place that is both a calm refuge and an enigmatic realm. Through a combination of textures, light, and shadow, her work captures the feelings of wonder and disorientation that accompany such exploration.
Each piece within this series serves as an invitation to escape the ordinary and embrace the intense presence that nature demands. By confronting these landscapes, viewers are encouraged to reflect on their inner journey, memories, and connection to the environment.
Pilar's artistic inclination has been influenced by her late Great Uncle Ramírez Villamizar, whose belief in the necessity of rationality and order amidst chaos has shaped her outlook. Her aim is not to mirror the violence of the world, but to present a calming order through her artwork—a testament of spirit and intelligence against ignorance and misfortune.
Inspired by the vitality and happiness of spring, her creations span various mediums, including cyanotype, encaustic monotype, tufting, and drawings in oil. This diverse approach allows her to capture the raw, untamed elements of both nature and self, providing a unique visual experience that transcends the boundaries of traditional art forms.
In "Into the Woods," the forest symbolizes not only a physical place but a reflection of our internal landscapes, offering viewers a chance to rediscover the untamed elements within themselves and in the natural world around them.
